About SLC

In 2007, the Sustainable Landscape Council was formed in Florida by industry leaders in response to Florida’s freshwater crisis as well as state and county government regulations restricting the use of landscape products and practices which may be harmful to Florida’s fragile ecosystems and environment.

The Sustainable Landscape Council saw a need for industry and consumer education and adoption of sensible and sustainable landscaping practices that address environmental concerns and maintain harmony with wildlife and waterways. The SLC promotes the use of innovative landscaping technologies which promote beauty with the least impact upon our sensitive watersheds. These technologies include drought and insect-resistant turf grasses, use of native, non-invasive plants, environmentally-friendly mulches, controlled release fertilizers with reduced amounts of nitrogen and phosphorous, and irrigation products that reduce water consumption. The Sustainable Landscape Council is comprised of like-minded members who have responsibly adopted Best Management Practices (BMP), adhere to environmentally-friendly and sustainable landscape methods and use plant and landscaping products that meet standards and guidelines of long term environmental sustainability.

Sustainable Landscape Council membership includes active involvement and networking with members who are landscapers; landscape architects; manufacturers and distributors; nurseries, greenhouses, and turf farms; non-profit organizations; governmental agencies and organizations; homeowner associations; commercial and residential developers; and individuals. The Sustainable Landscape Council is working to establish LEED® and Green Credit Certification for sustainable landscape methods and products that adhere to standards and specifications.

Efforts of the Sustainable Landscape Council will contribute to not only the development of sustainable landscape standards in Florida but seeks to aid in the effort to set standards nationwide. The SLC’s goal is to raise public awareness for all individuals to adopt environmentally-friendly sustainable landscape methods that reduce water consumption and make a conscientious commitment to “Greener landscapes for a greener world.”
